ASEAN Seeks to Overcome Digital Divides for Inclusive Access

Battambang, June 26, 2024 – ASEAN members are urged to collaborate effectively to tackle digital challenges ensuring that all citizens can fully benefit from digital advancements, regardless of their socioeconomic status or geographic location. This call to action was made by Has Sam Ath, Undersecretary of State for the Ministry of Information, during the opening of the 7th meeting of the ASEAN Digital Audiovisual Working Group on June 25, 2024, hosted by Cambodia.

Has Sam Ath highlighted that achieving comprehensive access to digital infrastructure is a significant hurdle. The digital divide—a gap where some individuals lack affordable and reliable internet access—significantly hinders inclusive participation in the digital age. He emphasized that the ongoing meeting is pivotal for ASEAN to forge the future of digital media effectively.

"By uniting our efforts, we can cultivate a dynamic digital environment that benefits all citizens, fosters regional integration, and propels ASEAN toward a more prosperous future," he remarked. He further stressed the importance of the meeting as a platform for developing regional strategies to enhance universal access, nurturing a robust content ecosystem, and leveraging technology for inclusive development.

The insights and strategies shared during the meeting are expected to chart the course for ASEAN’s digital future, enabling the creation of a digital landscape that empowers communities, celebrates diversity, and contributes to a more interconnected and affluent region.
